Part I: Dark Ages

This talk is based on the book Yugas by Joseph Selbie and David Steinmetz.

So I want to take you on a journey from the past to the present to the future.
My reason is: to understand where we are right now in terms of the world, and where might we be going in the future, and your part in it.

I will use the Hindu understanding of recurring cycles of human development called Yugas to do that. These periods are formulated around cycle a grand cycle of 24,000 years, with subperiod and subcycles.

Only when we correlate inner consciousness to outer behavior does the seeming chaos of history or future fall into a discernible pattern.

  • Humanity is ancient. Much older than the oldest, even modern understanding provides.  Mahenjo-Daro is a 7,000year-old civilization founded in what today is Pakistan. It had streets laid out like modern roads and intersections, homes with wells, running water, radiant heat, sewer systems, and weights and measures as accurate as having been found. This was the very last of the enlightened age, which ended in 700BC.
  • So I’m going to focus on two of these periods. The first one is called Kali Yuga. It began in 700 BC and has lasted until 1700, with a transition period from 1700 to 1900. That means that we came out of the Kali Yuga totally in 1900.

Sri Yukteswar, Yogananda’s guru, wrote about the Yugas in 1824. He suggested that the Kali Yuga was the darkest age, and we moved now into the period of Energy Age, called Dwarapa.
