Spiritual Health & Morning Rituals

The first thing that comes to mind is usually related to health, especially these days is physical health. Most of us think about fitness workouts, diet, or supplements. Yet your overall health is made up of several areas including physical, mental, emotional, environmental, social, and spiritual.

Here we will focus on the spiritual aspect of your health and how rituals can help. Now spirituality can mean different things to different people. Spirituality is about connecting to your deeper self, which includes finding more about who you are, what brings meaning into your life, and your purpose.

Working to improve your spiritual health can give your life a deeper meaning and motivate you to focus on more than the physical elements of your lifestyle.

By create a morning ritual you can improve your spiritual health:

1. Meditate.

Meditation can be a confusing topic because there are so many variations and teachings about it. There are very formal programs related to spiritual teachings, many self-improvement programs that bring meditation into their processes. Yet, meditation in its simplest form is turning your focus inside. This can be sitting quietly for 10 minutes or focusing your attention on an object, internally or externally. Doing this allows you to become aware of your inner life, your spiritual life. By allowing yourself time to meditate each day you also change the way your mind looks at the upcoming day and helps give perspective to it.

2. Practice gratitude.

Nearly all spiritual traditions acknowledge the power of being grateful. Being grateful opens our hearts and minds to appreciate life itself and the gifts it will bring. In class, we teach that when you order at the restaurant you say thanks to the waiter or waitress for your food, yet you no food. You are giving thanks for what will show up. Spend a few minutes after your meditation and give thanks even if it is just for waking up. Spending a few moments of your day thinking of things that you’re grateful for and that you appreciate in your life can help you maintain a more positive mindset. Be grateful for the little things you notice throughout the day.

3. Be intentional.

After being grateful take another minute or two and set an intention for the day. It can help you to set your mental framework for the day. Intentionality helps set a roadmap for your day. How do you want to spend your time and energy? It gives you a sense of meaning and purpose.

4. Find creative expression.

Give yourself the gift of creative expression. There are so many ways that you can find to express your inner life through your creativity. Not just in the traditional creative arts but in anything that uses your creative mind or rather the creative spirit. Something that allows your mind to focus to such an extent that it seems to disappears and the creative energy/spirit takes over.

5. Be positive.

there can be many things that grab your mind and make you feel more negative and stressed. By starting your day with a positive feeling you can help yourself move through those more difficult experiences. Being positive does not mean your day will be all positive. But you build a positive outlook day by day until you find that your thinking is trending in that direction. That will be followed by more experiences trending that way!

5. Daily journaling.

Many of you enjoy Journaling. It’s an opportunity to turn inward and to explore your internal dialogue. To express your feelings from what has taken place during the day. Writing helps you to connect your inner world and outer expression more fully. Spending a few minutes with a journal can also help with clarifying your thoughts, and help you make better decisions.
